Preparing Your Child for Admission to Hospital

The Admissions Department is located on the ground floor of the Hospital adjacent to the shop.

Opening Hours:

  • Monday to Friday                   7.00am to 8.00 pm
  • Sunday & Bank Holidays       1.00pm to 5.00 pm
  • Please attend for admission before 5.00 pm
  • Contact the Admission Officer if you will be attending after 5.00pm as the ward and medical team must be informed.

  • It is important that you talk to your child about going to hospital. If it is a new experience, your child may be unsure about the hospital environment. If they know what to expect in advance the experience will be less threatening for them. To help you do this we have prepared the following guidelines:

  • We recommend that you explain to your child, according to his/her age and understanding, the reason why he/she is being admitted to hospital.
  • Emphasise that it will only be temporary and explain what will happen.
  • It is important to be open with your child. So, if something will hurt, tell him/her that it will hurt.
  • Tell your child that it is normal to feel frightened and that he/she may cry.
  • Encourage your child to ask questions and express his/her feelings.
  • If you have arranged to stay overnight in the hospital, tell your child and if not, reassure him/her that you will visit frequently.
  • Involve your child in packing for the hospital stay and include a favourite toy.
  • Teenagers should be encouraged to talk about going to hospital as they may give the impression that they understand more then they do. Talking to them and involving them in discussions about their care will help them feel more in control.
  • Children in Hospital Ireland is a voluntary organisation which has helpful literature on children going to hospital.

What to bring to Hospital

To help you we have prepared a list of items that your child will require during his/her stay in hospital:

If your child is under 2 years:

  • Nappies - disposable
  • Barrier Cream
  • Soap - replace as needed
  • Face cloth/soap/sponge for nappy area
  • Night attire
  • Talc
  • Towels
  • Activity or game to play

If your child is over 2 years:

  • Day clothes
  • Dressing Gown
  • Pyjamas/nightdresses 
  • Slippers or shoes and socks
  • Change of underwear
  • Nappies - if wearing them
  • Towels
  • Toothbrush/toothpaste
  • Face cloth/soap/sponge for nappy area
  • Hair brush/comb
  • Shampoo
  • Activity or game to play


  • Please bring any items you would normally bring for a stay away from home.
  • The hospital is unable to accept responsibility for loss or damage to clothing or valuables.


If your child is on medication, please bring balance of medication, prescription and give it to the Nurse Manager on the ward.

Inpatient Admission

  • On the morning of admission, please telephone the Admissions Department (01) 409 6120, to confirm that there is a bed available for your child. 
  • On Sundays please telephone (01) 409 6100 and ask for Nursing Administration.
  • Admission staff will request a contact number preferably a mobile number. 
  • Hospital staff will contact you on that number to inform you if a bed is available for your child. 
  • You will receive a call back as soon as a bed is confirmed.
  • Please do not travel until the Admissions Department have confirmed bed availability as you will have to return home if a bed is not available.
  • The decision to defer your child’s admission is made by the Clinical Bed Manager and your child’s Medical Team. 
  • You may be deferred until the following day or an alternative date. You will be notified by letter.


Day Case Admission

You will be contacted by the Hospital prior to the date of admission to inform you of your appointment time.

Cancellation of an Inpatient or Day Case Appointment

Should you need to cancel you admission appointment please contact :

Please inform the Waitling List Office if your child has had:

  • A cough, cold, sore throat, infection, vominity or diarrhoes with a few days oc admission
  • A vaccination with one week of admission
  • Any childhoold illness such as measeles of Chicken pox weiht 6 weeks of admission. 


What to expect at Admission

  • When you arrive at the Main Entrance to the hospital, go directly to the Admissions Office on the ground floor. 
  • You should give your child’s name to the Admissions Officer.  They will contact the ward to ascertain that the allocated bed is ready for your child.  You may be asked to wait until the ward is ready to accommodate your child.
  • You will then be seen by the Admissions Officer, who will obtain patient data and insurance/eligibility cover information.
  • Once your child’s admission is complete you will be directed to the ward. 
  • You must attend the Admissions Department to have your child admitted to the Hospital before proceeding to the Ward.
  • On the ward you will be met by the Clinical Nurse Manager or Staff Nurse, who will take you and your child to his/her bed.  Your child will then be reviewed by the Clinical Team looking after your child during their admission.
