Nurses and Patients Celebrate as 29 Children’s Nurses Graduate

at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin

Thursday 22nd March, 2018: Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin (OLCHC) hosted its annual nursing graduation and hospital badge ceremony today. 29 Nurses graduated with a Higher Diploma in Children’s Nursing from University College Dublin (UCD) and Rachel Kenna, Director of Nursing, OLCHC delivered the keynote address at the ceremony held in the hospital.

The year-long postgraduate course/Higher Diploma in Children’s Nursing, which first commenced in 2006, is a comprehensive course for qualified nurses in other disciplines of Nursing to become qualified Children’s Nurses.

Speaking at the conferring ceremony, Ms Kenna reflected upon the history, developments and achievements of Nursing to this present day and how far the Nursing profession has come: “I am delighted to deliver the keynote address at this year’s OLCHC Nursing graduation ceremony. The Higher Diploma in Children’s Nursing provides vast experience and knowledge that helps to develop confident and competent nurses to work with children who have a wide variety of complex illnesses and injuries.

“Over the past number of years we have witnessed a number of changes / changing trends in Nursing at OLCHC. Our Nurses have had to constantly upskill and re-train in line with the latest developments in medicine, surgical and technological advancements. We have tailored Continuing Professional Development opportunities for our Nursing staff, and for our new graduates we have devised an ‘Adaptation programme’ supporting the transition to staff Nurse in this complex speciality of Children’s Nursing.”

Ms Kenna continued, “We are very fortunate to have an exceptional, highly-skilled nursing workforce, however, similar to most hospitals in Ireland there is a constant challenge to retain and recruit enough Nurses. I would very much like to see as much support as possible given to this including addressing issues of cost of living / renting in Dublin in particular.”

OLCHC is constantly recruiting Nurses. For more information, please visit our careers page on our website
